Who we are

As Western Australia’s leading hazard management agency, the Department of Fire and Emergency Services performs a critical role coordinating emergency services for a range of natural disasters and emergency incidents threatening life and property.

We operate 24 hours per day, 7 days per week on land, in the air and by sea across the vast 2.5 million square kilometres of our great state.

We employ over 1,800 operational personnel and corporate staff and have an extensive network of more than 26,000 volunteers who generously donate their time to deliver essential emergency services to the WA community.

About the program

Our student vacation program has a range of projects on offer – meaningful, real world projects that will benefit community safety, and kickstart your experience and networks to get you job ready!

It is an 8 week program where you work 30 hours a week between January and March 2025 and are paid $1,080 a week. In return, we provide high quality professional training and development opportunities to complement your on-the-job learning.

Our target qualification areas for 2024-25 include:

  • Environmental Science, Land Management (final year of undergraduate or postgraduate studies)
  • GIS and Remote Sensing (final year of undergraduate or postgraduate studies)
  • Science Communication, Communication and Media Studies (Videography) (undergraduate or postgraduate).

Projects may be based at the Emergency Services Complex in Cockburn Central or at the Bushfire Centre of Excellence in Nambeelup.
