Writing inclusive job advertisements

Providing hiring managers with information and tools to create accessible, safe and inclusive recruitment processes for people with disability.

Inclusive job advertisements demonstrate an agency’s commitment to building an inclusive workplace, encouraging applicants with disability to apply.

An inclusive job advertisement:

  • includes a statement that the agency values workforce diversity and inclusion
  • clearly outlines the steps involved in the recruitment process so a candidate can assess if they will require support or adjustment at any stage
  • includes a statement that welcomes the candidate to share their required adjustments
  • includes flexible work options
  • allows for non-essential elements of the role to be tailored to the skills of the person with disability
  • includes accessibility features such as ramp access to building entry, adjustable desk options and quiet spaces
  • contains inclusive language and is available in alternative formats such as Microsoft Word and large print
  • includes a contact person who can arrange adjustments to the recruitment process
  • includes multiple communications options such as email, phone and the National Relay Service.

What actions can I consider?

  • Work with your human resources team to use The Field Jobs platform to create more inclusive job advertisements and create a profile that includes accessibility features with a map, photos and virtual tour of your work area.
  • Use your agency’s style manual to create content in plain English. The Australian Government Style Manual includes useful guides on accessible and inclusive content, plain English and Easy Read formats.
  • Use The Field’s Inclusive language tool to check you are using disability inclusive language and follow People with Disability Australia’s language guide.
  • Include a link in your job advertisement to your agency’s diversity and inclusion policy and/or access and inclusion plan.
  • Consider the example equity, inclusion and access statements below and include them in job advertisements. To minimise bias in the selection process, the contact person for accessibility requirements should be an independent person with relevant experience and expertise.
