Implementing workplace adjustments

Providing hiring managers with information and tools to create accessible, safe and inclusive recruitment processes for people with disability.

All staff have the right to feel welcomed and included at work, and all employers must make reasonable workplace adjustments to allow people with disability to work productively and safely and fully participate in all aspects of employment.

The Workplace adjustments for people with disability guide supports employers to implement reasonable adjustments, engage with employment services and understand legal responsibilities.

What actions can I consider?

  • Familiarise yourself with the workplace adjustments guide and your agency’s workplace adjustment policy if it has one. Seek guidance from your human resources team if required.
  • Set up a meeting with your new team member to discuss any adjustments they may require. Encourage them to invite their Disability Employment Services provider or support person to the meeting if they have one.
  • Organise a workplace assessment if required. Some workplace adjustments and assessments may be accessed through the Employment Assistance Fund.
  • Workplace adjustments such as building modifications and assistive technology may take time to implement. Consider modifying work tasks or allowing the staff member to work from home on a temporary basis while adjustments are being implemented.
  • Document workplace adjustments and consider creating a Workplace Adjustment Passport. This can help streamline processes and provide continuity when there is a change in management, work area or role.
