Cyber crime explained

Cyber-dependent

These crimes are directed at computers or information and communication technology (ICT) and most commonly consist of computer intrusions and denial of service attacks.

These crimes did not exist prior to the introduction of computers or ICT.

Cyber-enabled

These are traditional crimes (such as fraud, identity theft, and child sexual exploitation or abuse) enacted through the use of computers, computer networks or other forms of ICT.

The scale, speed and reach of these crimes are greater than their traditional form.

If you are reporting a scam, rather than a cyber crime, report these to the National Anti-Scam Centre(link is external) via Scamwatch(link is external).
