All technology enabled crime must be reported through the Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network (ReportCyber), which refers reports to the most applicable agency in Australia.

Types of offences

Technology crime includes these types of offences:

  • committed directly against computers, computer systems and communications technologies. Examples: hacking, denial of service, distributed denial of service
  • where the use of the internet or information technology is integral to the commission of the offence. Examples: eBay fraud, email threats, email stalking, stealing, unlawful use of computer systems.

Technology enabled crime is not:

  • offences where the use of a technology is merely incidental to the commission of the offence. Examples: use of a phone to video record an event or stealing a computer.
