Magnetotelluric works by measuring natural electromagnetic fields, which are created by lightning storms happening around the world and solar winds interacting with the Earth’s magnetic field.
MT methods detect how these electromagnetic fields pass through the Earth. By studying this, we can map out the differences in electrical conductivity of underground materials, even hundreds of kilometres deep.
There are different types of MT surveys used to study underground conductivity at different depths. These include:
- Audio Magnetotellurics (AMT): Used to study shallow areas, from the surface down to a few kilometres deep.
- Broadband Magnetotellurics (BBMT): Can study both shallow areas and deeper ones, reaching depths of tens of kilometres.
- Long-Period Magnetotellurics (LPMT): Focuses on very deep areas, hundreds of kilometres below the surface, like the lower crust and upper mantle.
Each method is designed to explore specific layers of the Earth, helping us to understand the structures and materials at those depths.
Our current MT survey is WA-MT, which is part of WA Array.
MT data can also be downloaded from the National Computational Infrastructure (NCI) Data Catalogue.
