Access MAGIX Online

Most of the datasets listed in MAGIX Online have been submitted because of requirements under the Mining Act 1978. Anyone can voluntarily submit their geophysical data to be included in MAGIX Online. In this case the owner of the data can set the access conditions for their submission. MAGIX Online also includes datasets from government-funded surveys.

How to find and download data

You can search for and download geophysical datasets using MAGIX Online, the ‘Geophysical Surveys’ layers in GeoVIEW.WA, or download the layer files from the Data and Software Centre (DASC).

Access levels for data:

  1. PUBLIC: open-access data from companies. You can download it for free or order it on an external hard drive (additional costs apply).
  2. MULTICLIENT: data sold by an approved sales agent. The agent must provide the data at a reasonable price but can charge extra for any additional services.
  3. CONFIDENTIAL: data only available to the owner. The owner is not required to make the data public while it is still shown as confidential in MAGIX Online.

When a dataset is registered in MAGIX, its public release depends on the specific conditions set during registration.

Ordering data on an external hard drive

Instead of downloading individual files, you can buy an external hard drive with all available public data for $132 (including GST). You can also bring your own hard drive and have the data copied for $55 (including GST). Note that very large datasets (like LiDAR or 3D seismic data) need separate arrangements.

Access the GSWA Open-File Geophysical Data Request Form.

Submitting survey data to MAGIX Online

You can register your survey data in MAGIX as part of your exploration reporting. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Create a DEMIRS My Account.
  2. Upload the complete dataset in a zip file with the original folder structure.
  3. Include an operations or processing report.
  4. Provide a shapefile of the survey location.

Confidentiality rules

Airborne and remote surveys: data are subject to conditions of the Mining Act 1978 or the Airborne Survey Reporting Policy. Under the Reporting Policy, data remains confidential for 5 years after the survey ends. There is an optional 5-year extension if the data is submitted to a sales agent for commercial sale.

Ground geophysical data: confidential for 5 years after the survey or when it is mentioned in a public report, whichever comes first.

Special conditions apply to surveys submitted under the Exploration Incentive Scheme (EIS) Co-funded Geophysics program.

For voluntary submissions, the owner sets the data access conditions.

Reporting requirements

If your dataset is submitted under the Mining Act 1978, or it is attached to a statutory report, parts of the data must be submitted with every future report until the area is fully explored or released.

Once the related statutory report is made public, the dataset will also be released.

MAGIX Online Data Custodians

If you want to access survey data listed in MAGIX Online, you need to contact the data custodian. The custodian depends on the data's access status:

Accessing the Data

Open-file data: The Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) is the custodian. You can download the data for free using MAGIX Online or GeoVIEW.WA. You can also request the data on an external hard drive, but there may be a fee.

Confidential data: The company that owns the data is the custodian. They are not required to share it while it is still marked as confidential in MAGIX.

Multi-client data: The custodian is a sales agent. The agent must provide the data at a commercial price. If the agent refuses or cannot sell the data, you can contact us for assistance.
