This study is part of the Wind Turbine Manufacturing Initiative, which falls under the WA Recovery Plan.
The pre-feasibility study was completed in 2020 and made several recommendations, including:
- Developing a model for government-owned businesses in the energy sector such as Synergy, Horizon and Western Power, to increase and monitor local content in the wind energy industry.
- Examining the feasibility and precedent of using legislation or project processes to ensure local content in private sector wind farm projects.
- Identifying requirements for a potential manufacturing hub in WA, including searching for land.
- Identifying government and financial assistance required for WA businesses to transition to manufacturing wind turbine components. This may come in the form of:
- establishing a common user facility at an existing industrial hub, such as Henderson or Bunbury
- assisting with land purchases for lay down areas for delivery and storage of equipment; and/or,
- providing financial assistance to purchase specialist equipment for manufacturing components.
This study was followed by an independent full-feasibility study, conducted by Aurecon. For information on the findings, see the feasibility report findings page.
