About

The Wind Turbine Manufacturing Initiative (WTMI) was established in 2021 as part of WA’s Recovery Plan and in consideration of the opportunities emerging from the energy transition in a decarbonising economy.

The WTMI’s main objective is to enhance the participation of WA businesses in wind turbine manufacturing and servicing supply chains, to help create local manufacturing jobs and unlock further opportunities for local businesses.

This initiative has progressed to date in two main stages:

Stage 1: Scoping and preparation

This stage explored the potential opportunities for WA businesses in wind energy manufacturing and servicing. Key activities and outcomes of this stage included:

  • A prefeasibility study into producing wind turbine components. In response to the study recommendations, the 2021-22 State Budget allocated $10 million over 5 years for the WTMI.
  • An independent full feasibility study to Government, conducted by Aurecon, to identify wind turbine manufacturing and servicing supply chain opportunities for local industry. A summary of key findings is available on the feasibility report findings page.
  • The identification of key actions for Government, which are outlined on the WA Government Actions page.
  • The creation of a small WTMI team within the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation.
  • The establishment of a WTMI interagency working group to enable collaborative progression of key government actions.
  • The purposing of $8 million under the WTMI for industry support in the 2024-25 State Budget.
  • The development of a collaboration agreement with the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre to deliver an industry support program.

Stage 2: Action

The State Government is progressing key actions to enhance the participation of local businesses in wind energy supply chains and support the development of WA's wind energy manufacturing and servicing industry.
