Funerals in Australia can cost anywhere from $4000 to $15,000 depending on whether they are simple or elaborate.

It is important to know what you are getting and how much it will cost. The funeral director should provide a written quotation. You may be able to pay the amount off in installments but this must be pre-arranged and is usually a more expensive option.

Typical funeral costs include:

  • fees for the funeral director
  • transport
  • the coffin
  • death certificate
  • permits
  • burial or cremation
  • cemetery plot
  • other expenses such as a celebrant or priest, flowers, newspaper notices and the wake.

Moneysmart and the Australian Funeral Directors Association has more advice on funeral cost. You may also be able to pay for a funeral in different ways.
