Who needs to apply for a licence
A yard manager is someone employed or engaged by a dealer to manage or supervise the dealer's business of buying and/or selling vehicles. A yard manager must hold a valid Yard Manager's licence.
What do I need to do to lodge a complete application
To apply for a licence you must lodge a complete application. This means you must:
- Complete all of the relevant sections of the renewal application form.
- Attach/pay the correct fee. This is payable at the time of lodging the application.
- Provide the relevant police check, which are not more than three (3) months old at the time of lodgement. Only Police Checks issued by our list of approved providers will be accepted.
- Attach a copy of the the Certificate issued on the successful completion of the Dealer/Yard Manager Licence Requirements Course. (See Qualification requirements section below)
- Ensure a representative from your employing dealership has completed the Employer Declaration form and it’s ready to attach.
Lodging your application
Once you have completed the application form and have all of your supporting documents ready, you can lodge your application in one of two ways:

Show moreApplicants must have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973 and therefore must have completed the Motor Vehicle Yard Manager – Dealer / Yard Manager Licence Requirements Course
The above mentioned course must have been completed within 5 years of applying for the licence.
Training providers delivering this course must be recognised by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection. The courses delivered by the following Registered Training Organisations are currently accepted by the Commissioner:
- Motor Trade Association of WA (Inc) .
- Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers.
- Fusion Business College.
Please note training materials used for the courses remain, at all times, the property of the Department.
NOTE: If you have held the same type of licence within the last five years, or have been the qualifying director/partner or sole trader of a licensed dealership within the last 5 years, you may not be required to complete the course again. Instead you will need to attach a copy of your previous licence to your new application as evidence you qualify for a licence and have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973.
