Who needs to apply for a licence
A motor vehicle salesperson is someone who is employed or engaged by or on behalf of a dealer to buy or sell motor vehicles.
- Buy or sell vehicles (e.g. write up purchase contracts).
- Complete sales contract documentation.
- Take a customer for a demonstration drive.
- Show vehicles to a customer.
- Survey or discuss customer needs.
- Write up finance (not purchase) contracts.
- Sell after-care products.
- Arrange insurance.
- Record customers' details for the purpose of introducing a customer to a licensed salesperson.
You may qualify to be a trainee salesperson while you are waiting for your licence to be granted. (See Motor vehicle trainee salesperson section below)
What do I need to do to lodge a complete application
To apply for a licence you must lodge a complete application. This means you must:
- Complete all sections of the application form.
- Attach/pay the correct fee. This is payable at the time of lodging the application.
- Provide the relevant police check, which are not more than three (3) months old at the time of lodgement. Only Police Checks issued by our list of approved providers will be accepted.
- Attach a copy of the Certificate issued on the successful completion of the Salesperson's Course. (See Qualification requirements section below)
- Ensure a representative from your employing dealership has completed the Employer Declaration form and it’s ready to attach.
How to submit your application
Once you have completed the application form and have all of your supporting documents ready, you can lodge your application in one of three ways:

Motor vehicle trainee salesperson
Show moreTo be recognised as a trainee salesperson you must be employed by a licensed motor vehicle dealer. You must also have:
- Submitted an application for a salesperson’s licence to the Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety.
- Paid the applicable licence fee.
- Submitted to the department a National Police Certificate with your application.
- Provided evidence to the department with your application that you are enrolled in the MTAWA Salesperson Licensing Requirements Course with any of the following providers:
As a trainee salesperson, you may undertake only the following activities under supervision:
- Meeting and greeting customers and surveying or discussing customer needs.
- Recording customers’ personal details for the purposes of introducing customers to licensed salespersons.
- Showing vehicles to customers on the licensed premises of the dealer that is your employer.
- Taking customers for vehicle demonstration drives but only in the company of a licensed salesperson.
As a trainee salesperson, you are not permitted to:
- Negotiate with customers for the sale or purchase of vehicles.
- Write up sales contracts.
- In the event that your application for a salesperson’s licence is not successful, the trainee arrangement cannot continue.
- The Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety recommends that motor vehicle dealers employing trainee salespersons enter into an agreement with each trainee clearly delineating the scope of their duties. A suggested format for the agreement has been provided.
These arrangements were made in consultation with the Motor Trade Association of WA.
Qualification requirements
Show moreApplicants must have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973 and therefore must have completed the Motor Vehicle Salesperson – Salesperson’s Course.
The above mentioned course must have been completed within 5 years of applying for the licence.
Training providers delivering this course must be recognised by the Commissioner for Consumer Protection. The courses delivered by the following Registered Training Organisations are currently accepted by the Commissioner:
- Motor Trade Association of WA (Inc)
- Institute of Automotive Mechanical Engineers
- Fusion Business College
Please note training materials used for the courses remain, at all times, the property of the Department.
NOTE: If you have held the same type of licence within the last five years, or have been the qualifying director/partner or sole trader of a licensed dealership within the last 5 years, you may not be required to complete the course again. Instead you will need to attach a copy of your previous licence to your new application as evidence you qualify for a licence and have sufficient knowledge of the Motor Vehicle Dealers Act 1973.
