Find out about the assessment criteria

Read the administrative guidelines to learn about the principles used to assess applications.

We assess licence and lease applications under principles and processes outlined in two administrative guidelines.

Applications for marine-related aquaculture licences and leases are assessed under principles set out in Administrative Guideline No. 1.

Lease applications are also subject to the processes outlined in Administrative Guideline No. 2.

Although we assess applications for freehold (private) land internally at DPIRD, we require the applicant to obtain local government approval. Council approval is required to carry out the aquaculture activities at the location. This is usually provided in the form of a letter from the local government authority. Applicants should contact the local government authority for more information.

If your proposal includes discharge to the marine environment, you may also need approval from the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (DWER). Please contact DWER for more information.
