Motor vehicle repairer - Scope of work

Scope of work for motor vehicle repairer registration certificate holders.

The below information provides a description of activities which a Western Australia (WA) motor vehicle repairer registered since 24 September 2022 is permitted to perform. If you are a WA licensee visiting another state under AMR, you are only allowed to perform the activities listed below.

Scope of work

  • Undertake repair work on registered vehicles
  • They are endorsed for specific classes of work
  • They can work unsupervised and can supervise up to three (3) uncertified repairers in their authorised classes of repair work

ClassActivities

Title: Air Conditioning Work

Code: ACW

Any work required to install, service, repair, overhaul, remove or retrofit an air conditioning system in a heavy or light vehicle.

Also entitles the motor vehicle repairer to carry out work associated with electrical accessory fitting work (EAF).

Title: Body Building Work

Code: BBW

Any work required to do any of the following:

  • to fabricate or modify a body of a motor vehicle to fit the vehicle's chassis;
  • to fit the chassis of a motor vehicle with a fabricated or modified body.

Also entitled to carry out work associated with classes EAF and MAF.

Does not include:

  • realigning the chassis of a motor vehicle;
  • realigning, repairing, preparing for painting or painting a panel, frame or other component of the body of a motor vehicle;
  • installing or removing any glass in the body of a motor vehicle, other than installing or removing any moveable glass, if required.

Title: Brake Work

Code: BRW

Any work required to service, repair, overhaul or modify a braking system that is, was, or may be, fitted to a motor vehicle.

Title: Cooling System Work

Code: CSW

Any work required to service, repair, overhaul or modify a cooling system that is, was, or may be, fitted to a motor vehicle.

Title: Diesel Work

Code: DSW

Any work required to do any of the following:

  1. to service, repair, overhaul or modify any of the following that is, was, or may be, fitted to a heavy vehicle or light vehicle:
    1. a diesel fuel system
    2. a diesel engine;
  2. to service, repair, overhaul or modify any of the following that is, was, or may be, fitted to a heavy vehicle or light vehicle propelled by a diesel engine:
    1. an air induction system;
    2. an ignition system;
    3. an engine management system;
    4. a cooling system;
    5. a hydraulic system
  3. to fabricate, service, repair or modify the exhaust system of a heavy vehicle or light vehicle propelled by a diesel engine.

Also carry out work associated with classes CSW, EAF, ERW, HVS, LVS, MAF and MCS.

Title: Electrical Accessory Fitting Work

Code: EAF

Any work required to install or remove an electrical accessory to a motor vehicle.

Does not include an electrical accessory that does not affect the performance, safety or security of the motor vehicle.

Title: Electrical Work

Code: ELW

Any work required to install, service, repair, overhaul or remove any of the following in a motor vehicle:

  1. any electrical equipment or system (including any electrical accessory and any electrical component associated with any other prescribed accessory);
  2. any electrical part of any other thing or system.

Also carry out work associated with classes EAF, HVS, LVS and MCS.

Title: Engine Reconditioning Work

Code: ERW

Any work required to overhaul an engine (including a cylinder head of an engine) that is, was, or may be, fitted to a motor vehicle.

Also carry out work associated with class DSW.

Title: Glazing Work

Code: GLW

Any work required to install, repair or remove a windscreen or other glass in the body of a motor vehicle.

Title: Heavy Vehicle Servicing Work

Code: HSV

Gross vehicle mass of more than 8000kg.

Any work required to do any of the following:

  1. in respect of a heavy vehicle to which paragraph (b) does not apply, to carry out minor electrical servicing or to service any of the following -
    1. the fuel system;
    2. the air induction system;
    3. the engine;
    4. the ignition system;
    5. the engine management system;
    6. the cooling system;
    7. the driveline;
    8. any electronic drive management system;
    9. the braking system;
    10. the steering system;
  2. the suspension system;
  3. a wheel assembly;
  4. any hydraulic system;
  5. in respect of a heavy vehicle during an emergency break down:
    1. to diagnose the cause of the breakdown;
    2. to carry out emergency servicing or repair on a thing diagnosed as the cause or possible cause of the breakdown.

Also carry out work associated with classes LVS and MCS.

Title: Heavy Vehicle Work

Code: HVW

Gross vehicle mass of more than 8000kg.

Any work required to do any of the following in respect of a heavy vehicle:

  1. to service, repair, overhaul or modify any of the following -
    1. the fuel system;
    2. the air induction system;
    3. the engine;
    4. the ignition system;
    5. the engine management system;
    6. the cooling system;
    7. the driveline;
    8. any electronic drive management system;
    9. the braking system;
    10. the steering system;
    11. the suspension system;
  2. to fabricate, service, repair or modify the exhaust system;
  3. to service, repair or replace a wheel assembly;
  4. to balance a wheel or align the wheels;
  5. to service or repair any hydraulic system;
  6. to carry out minor electrical servicing or minor electrical repair;
  7. to install or remove a prescribed accessory.

Also carry out work associated with classes BRW, CSW, DTW, EAF, HVS, LVS, LVW, MAF, MCS, MCW, TFW, and UNW.

Title: Light Vehicle Servicing Work

Code: LVS

Gross vehicle mass of less than 8000kg.

Any work required to do any of the following:

  1. in respect of a light vehicle to which paragraph (2) does not apply, to carry out minor electrical servicing or to service any of the following -
    1. the fuel system;
    2. the air induction system;
    3. the engine;
    4. the ignition system;
    5. the engine management system;
    6. the cooling system;
    7. the driveline;
    8. any electronic drive management system;
    9. the braking system;
    10. the steering system;
    11. the suspension system;
    12. a wheel assembly;
    13. any hydraulic system;
  2. in respect of a light vehicle during an emergency break down -
    1. to diagnose the cause of the breakdown;
    2. to carry out emergency servicing or repair on a thing diagnosed as the cause or possible cause of the breakdown.

Also carry out work associated with classes HVS and MCS.

Title: Light Vehicle Work

Code: LVW

Gross vehicle mass of less than 8000kg.

Any work required to do any of the following in respect of a light vehicle:

  1. to service, repair, overhaul or modify any of the following:
    1. the fuel system;

    4. the ignition system;
    5. the engine management system;
    6. the cooling system;
    7. the driveline;
    8. any electronic drive management system;
    9. the braking system;
    10. the steering system;
    11. the suspension system;
  2. to fabricate, service, repair or modify the exhaust system;
  3. to service, repair or replace a wheel assembly;
  4. to balance a wheel or align the wheels;
  5. to service or repair any hydraulic system;
  6. to carry out minor electrical servicing or minor electrical repair;

Title: Locksmith Work

Code: LSW

Any work required to service, repair or replace a locking or transponder system that is, was, or may be, fitted to a motor vehicle.

Title: Mechanical Accessory Fitting Work

Code: MAF

Any work required to install or remove a mechanical accessory to a motor vehicle.

Does not include a mechanical accessory that does not affect the performance, safety or security of the motor vehicle.

Title: Motor Cycle Servicing Work

Code: MCS

Any work required to do any of the following:

  1. in respect of a motor cycle to which paragraph (b) does not apply, to carry out minor electrical servicing or to service any of the following -
    1. the fuel system;
    2. the air induction system;
    3. the engine;
    4. the ignition system;
    5. the engine management system;
    6. any cooling system;
    7. the driveline;
    8. any electronic drive management system;
    9. the braking system;
    10. the steering system;
    11. the suspension system;
    12. a wheel assembly;
  2. in respect of a motor cycle during an emergency break down:
    1. to diagnose the cause of the breakdown;
    2. to carry out emergency servicing or repair on a thing diagnosed as the cause or possible cause of the breakdown.

Also carry out work associated with classes HVS and LVS

Title: Motor Cycle Work

Code: MCW

Any work required to do any of the following in respect of a motor cycle:

  1. to service, repair, overhaul or modify any of the following:
    1. the fuel system;
    2. the air induction system;
    3. the engine;
    4. the ignition system;
    5. the engine management system;
    6. any cooling system;
    7. the driveline;
    8. any electronic drive management system;
    9. the braking system;
    10. the steering system;
    11. the suspension system;
  2. to fabricate, service, repair or modify the exhaust system;
  3. to service, repair or replace a wheel assembly;
  4. to balance a wheel or align the wheels;
  5. to carry out minor electrical servicing or minor electrical repair;
  6. to install or remove a prescribed accessory;
  7. to realign the chassis.

Also entitles the motor vehicle repairer to carry out work associated with classes CSW, DTW, EAF, HVS, LVS, MAF, and MCS

Title: Painting Work

Code: PAW

Means any work required to prepare for painting or to paint a panel, frame or other component of the body of a motor vehicle, otherwise than in the course of manufacturing the vehicle.

Does not include any of the following:

  1. realigning the chassis of a motor vehicle;
  2. realigning or repairing a panel, frame or other component of the body of a motor vehicle;
  3. installing or removing any glass in the body of a motor vehicle, other than installing or removing any moveable glass, if required.

Title: Panel Beating Work

Code: PBW

Any work required to do any of the following:

  1. to realign the chassis of a motor vehicle;
  2. to realign or repair a panel, frame or other component of the body of a motor vehicle;

Also entitles the motor vehicle repairer to carry out work associated with classes EAF and MAF.

Does not include installing, repairing or removing any glass (other than installing or removing any moveable glass) in the body of a motor vehicle.

Title: Trimming Work

Code: TRI

Any work required to fabricate, repair or replace a seat or any interior lining or floor covering in a motor vehicle.

Also carry out work associated with class MAF.

Does not include any such work that does not affect the performance, safety or security of the motor vehicle.

Title: Tyre Fitting Work

Code: TFW

Any work required to do any of the following in respect of a heavy vehicle, light vehicle or motor cycle:

  1. to repair or replace a rim, tyre or tube;
  2. to balance a wheel.

Title: Underbody Work

Code: UNW

Any work required to service or repair the braking, steering and suspension systems and to fabricate, service, repair or modify the exhaust system:

Title: Wheel Aligning Steering and Suspension

Code: WSS

Any work required to:

  1. to inspect, service or replace the steering system or suspension system;
  2. to balance a wheel or align the wheels.

WA requirements

To get a WA certificate of registration

  • Must have the prescribed qualifications for each class of work required.
  • Must have an Australian police check.

To keep a WA certificate of registration

  • It is a continuous certificate that does not need to be renewed but additional classes can be added over time.

They must comply with the Motor Vehicle Repairers Act 2003 and Motor Vehicle Repairers Regulations 2007.
