Traffic infringements

Following the road rules is the best way to stay safe while travelling on the roads.
Last updated:

Infringement customer services are being transitioned from WA Police Force to the Department of Transport (DoT) in 2024. DoT thank you for your patience while they assist with your infringement query.

If you are caught committing an offence you will be issued with a traffic infringement notice, and depending on the type of offence, your car may be impounded.

Payment must be made within 28 days of the due date shown on the notice. Refer to the payment section of your notice for payment options. Due to legislative requirements, part payment and late payment cannot be accepted.

Additional costs or possible suspension of your vehicle and/or drivers licence may also apply for late payment.

Speed and red-light camera offences

Privately owned vehicles

A traffic infringement notice is issued, in the first instance, to the registered owner of the offending vehicle identified in the photograph:

  • if you were the driver named on the notice, you must pay the notice in full by the due date shown on the notice
  • if you were not the driver named on the notice, do not pay the notice. Scroll down this page to the ‘nominating the driver’ section and follow the steps.

Business owned vehicles

If the vehicle is registered to a business, a notice requesting information (NRI) will be issued to the company:

  • the responsible person for the business must, by the compliance date shown on the notice, provide the details of the driver or person in charge of the vehicle at the time of the alleged offence
  • the nominated driver will then be issued with the infringement notice, which is a modified penalty to that endorsed on the NRI
  • if the required details cannot be ascertained or provided, the business must pay the modified penalty (double the individual penalty) by the payment due date
  • scroll down this page to the ‘business owned vehicle’ section of this page and follow the steps.

On-the-spot notices

Hand written and electronic on-the-spot general traffic infringement notices are issued to an individual identified by a police officer, or other authorised person, at the time a traffic offence is identified.

The notice must be paid in full within 28 days of the issue date on the notice.

Privately owned vehicles

If you were not the driver of the vehicle or the vehicle was sold prior to the time of offence, you are responsible for nominating the correct person.

You have 28 days from the issue date of the infringement notice to supply the details of the driver or person in charge.

Complete the statement Part ‘F' on the infringement notice with their full details (name, date of birth and current address) and include the original infringement notice.

Once received, police will issue a new infringement to the nominated driver.

Business owned vehicles

The responsible person for a business owned vehicle is required to provide the details of the driver in the notice requesting information form (PDF, 60KB)

Complete Division 1 ‘Driver or person in charge – known’, with their details (name, date of birth and current address) and include the original notice requesting information.

Complete Division 2 if the vehicle was stolen at the time of offence or Division 3 if the driver is unknown.

Court hearing

If you were the driver of the vehicle and wish to have an infringement notice dealt with by a court do not pay the infringement notice.

Advise in writing before the due date of your election to have the matter heard by a court to Infringement Management & Operations (preferably accompanied with a statutory declaration (PDF, 21KB)).

You should complete you advise in writing in the presence of a police officer if your election is via 'court election'.

In all cases when advising in writing, the registration number of the vehicle, any reference numbers and a telephone contact number must be included.
