Water licensing

The Department of Water and Environmental Regulation is responsible for ensuring the Western Australia’s water resources are planned, managed and developed to meet community requirements, now and in the future.
Last updated:

We issue water licences and permits in accordance with the Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914 to protect the state's water resources and promote the sustainable and efficient use of water.

This work is underpinned by our regulatory responsibilities and how we undertake our regulatory functions.

Several types of water licences and permits are issued to authorise different activities. Licences and permits are subject to terms, conditions and restrictions.
