At the age of 70, grandfather of nine, Chris Herrmann sees this stage of his life as a privilege and an opportunity to live life to the fullest. Chris says, "We all have something to offer, regardless of age which means we all need to encourage intergenerational dialogue, valuing experience, and promoting lifelong learning as well as being open to new ways of doing things."

Chris values getting older as a new era in life's journey. "I see it as a time to embrace new experiences, wisdom, and opportunities that this chapter brings. Rather than slowing down, it's about leaning into all that life still has to offer."

Widowed after 40 years of marriage, Chris embarked on a "senior gap year," embodying his belief that life is a journey, not a destination.

During the gap year Chris travelled both on overseas adventures and went four-wheel driving and camping across Australia.

"I believe in never being idle. I find joy in spending time with family, doing community work, staying fit through walking, and cycling, and even singing in a male choir group." Chris says.

During Seniors Week community organisations and local governments, using Communities grants, will celebrate with hundreds of events and activities designed to connect older people with their community and promote positive ageing.

Events include a pantomime in Wyalkatchem, Seniors Week Olympics in Shark Bay, an historical society excursion to gold rush town sites in the Eastern Goldfields, a range of luncheons and a high tea in Victoria Park.

The annual 'Have a Go Day' is also being held at Burswood Park this Wednesday 13 November. This free event is coordinated by the Seniors Recreation Council of WA and runs from 9am to 3pm. The Communities Seniors and Ageing WA Seniors Card and Volunteering teams will have a marquee providing information, resources, and replacement Seniors Cards. The 2024 Seniors Information Resource will also be launched, featuring useful information about the services, concessions, and programs available to older Western Australians.  The full program is available on the Seniors Recreation Council of WA have a go webpage

Chris says "It's important to remember that the older person you're looking at was exactly your age once. There's great value in asking for the benefit of their experience and wisdom. Don't be too proud to reach out and learn from someone who's walked the path before you."
