Apply for a road closure at a major event

Permits are required for events that will impact roads or the flow of traffic.

Police are responsible for providing approval for three types of event permits:

  1. Road closures.
  2. Suspension of the Road Traffic Act.
  3. Public meetings and processions.

In most instances you will need approval from the local authority and/or Main Roads WA before the police can approve it.

Permit applications for general sized events are required to be submitted to your local police station at least two weeks prior to the event.

Organisers for major/large events are recommended to begin liaising with the events officer from your local police station as early as possible.

Follow these steps to apply for a permit for your event type:

Road closures and Suspension of Road Traffic Act

The road closure application can be applied for by individuals, sporting clubs/groups and social clubs/groups for the purpose of street parties, sporting events, and community festivals which are held on a road. Fees apply (scroll to the bottom of the page to see the fees).

The suspension of the Road Traffic Act application can be applied for by individuals, sporting clubs/groups and social clubs/groups to allow competitors to compete in a race or speed test on a road. No fee applies.

Steps to apply for either a road closure or suspension of Road Traffic Act

  1. Obtain approval from the local authority.
  2. Obtain approval from Main Roads WA.
  3. Upon receipt of the above, submit an application form and other documentation with local police.
  4. You will be notified from the State Traffic Operations unit if your application has been approved or refused.

Public meetings and processions

This application can be applied for by individuals, community groups, religious groups, trade unions, RSL sub-branches for the purpose of public meetings where three or more people communicate, express or procure a view where members of the public has access or are invited. No fee applies.

Steps to apply for a public meeting or procession

  1. Submit an application form with your local police station. If the event passes through several police districts the application may be emailed directly to state.traffic.intel.planning.co-ord.unit@police.wa.gov.au
  2. You will be notified from the State Traffic Operations unit if your application has been approved or refused.
