This award is presented to an apprentice who has been outstanding in all aspects of their training.
Check the eligibility criteria
To be eligible to enter this category, you must:
- be a permanent resident of Australia and be undertaking training in Western Australia;
- have completed* or be due to complete your training in the period 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025 in a training course that leads to a nationally recognised outcome or qualification relevant to the award you are applying for;
- be registered with Apprenticeship Office as an apprentice or trainee** with a contract of training lodged in WA; and
- not be enrolled at school.
* This refers to the completion date on the training contract. If you have completed early through competency-based completion, evidence of this early completion must be attached to the online application.

Step 3: Complete the selection criteria
Show moreAs part of your application, you will be asked to respond to four selection criteria. This is where you have the opportunity to tell us about yourself and your achievements. Each criterion has a limit of 400 words.
Criterion 1: Career and study achievements
Consider the following points.
- Why did you choose your course?
- How has it changed or impacted you?
- What have you gained from it?
- What have you been able to bring to your workplace?
Criterion 2: Team and communication skills
Consider any skills you have developed through your training, such as:
- what have you been able to tell others, work mates, employers etc. about your training?
- what do you like about working in a team setting?
- what traits do you think are important to positively influence others?
Criterion 3: Ability to be an ambassador (representative) for training in Australia
Tell us about:
- examples where you have taken a leadership role inside or outside of work.
- what other activities have you been involved in where you have been a representative?
- how you would describe the quality of your training experience.
Criterion 4: Other qualities and pursuits
Consider the following.
- Have you had to address any challenges that have impacted on your training?
- When have you been required to use initiative either in your training, your personal life or your workplace?
- What other qualities or activities do you feel would be useful in your role as apprentice of the year?
- What other community or industry involvement have you had?

Step 4: Complete any required documents
Show moreMake sure you have completed the following documents required for all applicants. A template for each document is available via the links below.
- A signed talent release form (to enable WA Training Awards to use your photo and information if you are a finalist or winner).
- At least one written reference from either an employer, host employer or your trainer/lecturer.

- If employed at the time of applying, applicants must provide an employer endorsement. This confirms your employer is aware of time off you may need and supports this. It is not a reference.
