The contract was extended to 30 September 2018 to allow time for development of alternative arrangements to mitigate potential adverse impacts to the continuity of power supplies in the North Country and Eastern Goldfields regions of Western Power’s network. These arrangements involve the use of Network Control Services contracts that require associated changes to the Electricity Industry (Network Quality and Reliability of Supply) Code 2005.
Amendments to the Electricity Industry (Network Quality and Reliability of Supply) Code 2005 were made by the Minister for Energy and published in the Government Gazette on 25 September 2018. Following this change, temporary Network Control Services contracts between Western Power and Synergy will be in place from October 2018 to ensure the Mungarra and West Kalgoorlie gas turbine facilities remain operational for network reliability purposes.
An information paper released on 3 September 2018 on the need for the Network Control Services arrangements and associated changes to the Electricity Industry (Network Quality and Reliability of Supply) Code 2005 is available below.
