The role
They provide assessment and intervention services for prisoners, juvenile detainees and offenders in the community, with the aim of increasing community safety.
As a social worker working with prisoners or adult offenders, you will conduct individual counselling, provide treatment assessments for appropriate programs, assess at-risk prisoners and/or facilitate group programs designed to enhance rehabilitation of offenders.
You'll do this by addressing factors associated with offending behaviour and assist offenders with daily life especially within prison environments.
You may work with juvenile detainees in detention centres to help rehabilitate and reintegrate them into the community or with families and communities, providing individual counselling or facilitating intensive intervention programs aimed at serious and/or repeat youth and adult offenders.

Eligibility

Depending on the requirements of the position, a current Working with Children check or ability to successfully obtain one, may be required to be eligible for appointment as a social worker (this check is undertaken by the Department).
You'll need a minimum of a 4-year degree in social work and be eligible for full membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers.
