Therapeutic Residential Care Review

Research: Evidence-based review of therapeutic residential care models.
Last updated:
Young people in therapeutic residential care often have complex needs, requiring a comprehensive approach to encompass all dimensions of their care.  In 2023, Communities commissioned the Australian Centre for Child Protection (ACCP-WA) to undertake an evidence-based review of research regarding best practice in relation to models of therapeutic residential care in Australia.  This was completed in June 2024.

The Review explored the literature regarding six therapeutic care models, including what was known about the implementation and outcomes of the various models examined.  The focus was on practice in the Australian context, what factors impact and influence the implementation of therapeutic residential care and examined various implementation strategies to support the use of therapeutic care models.
