Respect in Mining

Improving gender equality and safety of women in mining.
Last updated:

Department of Communities (Communities) is working in partnership with Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) to deliver the Respect in Mining Program as part of the suite of initiatives under the Mental Awareness, Respect and Safety (MARS) Program.

The Respect in Mining Program is built on the principles of Communities’ Respectful Relationships program and has been developed for the mining industry by Curtin University’s Collaboration for Evidence, Research, and Impact in Public Health. It seeks to build workers’ relationships that are characterised by non-violence, equality, mutual respect, and trust. It is designed to support small and medium mining organisations to increase awareness and knowledge of the gendered drivers of violence, the impact of gender inequality on women’s safety and economic security, and the impact of gendered division in leadership and decision making.

Gender inequality is the primary driver of workplace sexual harassment across all industries and workplaces. Preventing and addressing workplace sexual harassment is central to ensuring women’s physical and psychological safety, improving workforce participation, career progression and access to leadership opportunities and economic security. Women always have a right to be safe and respected at work.

Respect in Mining offers a suite of tools and resources for a whole of organisation approach to embed gender equality policies and practices to benefit all employees. It outlines how to set clear standards, policies, and procedures for expectations of behaviour, and how to identify and appropriately respond to incidents of sexual harassment and sexual assault in the workplace. A supporting Implementation Guide provides directions on how to put the tools and resources into practice and monitor the overall shift in workplace culture to improve practice.

The Respect in Mining program strategically aligns with the outcomes of Stronger Together - WA's Plan for Gender Equality, implementation of the Respect@Work Report, recommendations of the Enough is Enough Report and the development of WA’s first Sexual Violence Prevention and Response Strategy.
