Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability

Western Australia releases its response to the Final Report of the Disability Royal Commission.
Last updated:

The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability (Disability Royal Commission) was established in April 2019 in response to community concern about widespread reports of violence against, and the neglect, abuse and exploitation of people with disability.

The Royal Commission released its Final Report in September 2023, putting forward 222 recommendations for change, of which 132 are applicable to Western Australia.

The WA Government has released its response to these recommendations, which will result in better legal protections, safer services, and greater accessibility and inclusion, creating more empowering environments for people with disability across the State.

The WA Government fully supports the Disability Royal Commission in its efforts to identify and respond to issues affecting people with disability and the opportunity it provided people with disability to share their experiences.

We would like to thank everyone who has been involved in the process so far, including people with disability, their families and carers who showed great courage in sharing their stories of lived experience and insights to the Royal Commission.

Next steps

The WA Government will take a considered approach to work through the reforms, acknowledging the importance of working in consultation with people with disability, their families and carers, all levels of government, the disability services sector, and the wider community.

Supported by the Department of Communities, the Minister for Disability Services will oversee the work being undertaken across government and the disability service sector.

Implementing the recommendations is a shared responsibility across 16 WA Government agencies, as well as between the Commonwealth and other States and Territories.
