WA's energy sector governance arrangements are changing

Decision
Improvements to WA’s energy sector governance arrangements are proposed to respond to the rapid pace of change in the sector. Energy Policy WA invites your feedback on these important developments.
Last updated:

The Western Australian energy sector is currently experiencing unprecedented change. New technologies and business models are rapidly displacing the traditional means of producing and consuming energy, re-shaping every aspect of the sector.

In addition to the substantial work being undertaken by the Energy Transformation Taskforce, the WA Government has announced improvements to the energy sector governance arrangements to ensure efficient outcomes that can keep pace with the evolution of the sector.

The changes seek to rationalise and clarify governance roles to reduce existing overlaps and address ongoing gaps.  These changes will also make better use of the different skills across the governance bodies by clarifying their focus.

Energy Policy WA has released a Consultation Paper outlining the WA Government’s proposed amendments. The Consultation Paper includes appendices detailing draft amendments to the Wholesale Electricity Market (WEM) Rules and Gas Services Information (GSI) Rules, as well as drafting instructions for amendments to the WEM Regulations, GSI Regulations, and Rule Change Panel Regulations.

Stakeholder feedback is invited on the draft amendments.

Submissions can be made at submissions@energy.wa.gov.au and are due by 5:00pm (AWST), 11 December 2020.

The Consultation Paper and further information is available below.
