The WA Government's response

The Statement of Intent is an interim response on the issue of Aboriginal youth suicide. It arises from the findings of a significant body of reports over the past 15 years.

The most recent of these are the State Coroner’s Inquest into the deaths of 13 children and young persons in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, and the former Education and Health Standing Committee’s 2016 ‘Learnings from the message stick: the report of the Inquiry into Aboriginal youth suicide in remote areas’ (the Message Stick Inquiry).

The statement includes the following subjects:

  • Listening to, involving and empowering Aboriginal people, and the provision of culturally based programs
  • Improved services and programs
  • Increased government leadership, co-ordination and accountability
  • Next steps
  • Recommendations of the State Coroner's Inquest
  • Recommendations of the Message Stick Inquiry report.
