Dr David (Russ) Russell-Weisz has been the Director General of the Department of Health since 2015. Dr Russell-Weisz has steered the public health system through a period of significant reform to devolved governance, which included the establishment of health service provider (HSP) boards under the Health Services Act 2016. Along with Western Australian Health Executive team, Dr Russell-Weisz is responsible for delivering the recommendations of the Sustainable Health Review: Final Report to the Western Australian Government 2019.
Before his appointment as Director General, Dr Russell-Weisz, led the commissioning of the state’s flagship Fiona Stanley Hospital, and served as the Chief Executive of the North Metropolitan Health Service where he led the redevelopment of the QEII Medical Centre, and oversaw the operations of three tertiary and three outer metropolitan hospitals.
Dr Russell-Weisz guided the Western Australian health system’s successful response to the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring continuous quality of care for patients and the progression of strategic projects.
