Classes of motor vehicle repair work

What classes of vehicle work can you apply for as a motor vehicle repairer.

Under the Motor Vehicle Repairers Act 2003, motor vehicle repair businesses are required to hold a business licence but they are no longer required to hold separate or additional licenses for each and every class of motor vehicle repairs.

A repair business must ensure repair work is only carried out by a person who holds a certificate for the specific class of repair work, or where a person does not possess a certificate, their work is supervised by a person who holds a certificate for that class of repair work.

There are 23 prescribed classes of repair work for which a repairer's certificate can be granted.

The following information outlines the classes of repair work for which a person can be certified under the Act and Regulations.

As a guide, we have included (under the class of repair work) the current Australian Automotive Retail, Services and Repair Training Package (AUR) qualifications or units you could use to obtain certification (ie. AUR99, AUR05, AUR12 or AUR equivalent).

You only need to apply for the classes you are directly involved with. For example, to do repairs to a motor vehicle, a mechanic may need to remove a body panel or a seat, but not repair it. This does not mean they need to apply for the classes of Panel Beating Work and Trimming Work, only Light Vehicle Work. Generally, you will qualify to do what you were taught during your training or apprenticeship.
