Education planning for children in care

All children in the care of the Chief Executive Officer of the Department of Communities need a dedicated education plan to suit their needs.

Education is directly linked to the wellbeing, opportunity, and life outcomes of a child. Children in the care of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Department of Communities (Communities) often have unique educational needs.

Meeting those needs requires combined planning and support. Communities works collaboratively with the Department of Education, Catholic Education Office of Western Australia (CEOWA) and Australian Independent Schools of Western Australia (AISWA) to ensure each child in care is supported by a Documented Plan.

A Documented Plan is a collective work document between the school, the child, parent/carer, and Communities to help address and support the educational needs of the child. Plans monitor, assess, and evaluate teaching and learning programs that are personalised for students. Schools currently develop a range of planning documents that describe differentiated or individualised educational planning that can include social, behavioural, and academic dimensions of schooling.

It is the right of every child to access an appropriate education that is in the child’s best interests. Children in care should have equal access to educational opportunity.
