Updated advice for timing of COVID-19 vaccinations

News story
ATAGI have released updated advice on COVID-19 vaccination timings.
Last updated:

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has released updated advice (external link) on when you should receive COVID-19 vaccination.

COVID-19 vaccine dose intervals

ATAGI now recommends extending dose intervals for the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines to 8 weeks (previously 3-4 weeks) to improve the immune response to vaccination.

The dose interval can be reduced (to a minimum of 3 weeks for Pfizer or 4 weeks for Moderna) for people at higher risk of severe COVID-19 (including older adults and people with underlying medical conditions), in an outbreak setting, or prior to international travel.

COVID-19 vaccination post infection

ATAGI now recommends waiting three months after having COVID-19 before getting your next vaccine dose.

This updated advice reflects the lower risk of reinfection with the Omicron variant within the first 3 months following a confirmed infection, particularly if a person is up to date with their COVID-19 vaccinations.
