The Department of Communities has reached an important milestone in our commitment to build three new Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation facilities in Western Australia - Geraldton, Kununurra and Perth.

Minister for Housing John Carey today announced 110A Hamilton Street, Cannington as the site of the Perth Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation.

Announcement of the site represents an important milestone for the project and acknowledges the consultation and engagement that has been undertaken with the Aboriginal community throughout Western Australia, Noongar Elders and Custodians, and with local government in the metropolitan area.

Established Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodations in Kalgoorlie, Derby and Broome are valued in their communities for providing regional visitors with accommodation and welcoming spaces to meet and for their participation in community events.

Program Manager, Jackie Farmer said that the Perth Short Stay project team has acknowledged the importance and value of identifying Aboriginal cultural considerations which have then influenced the site requirements.

“In particular, the provision of outdoor spaces for recreation and yarning circles and the retention of trees on the sites will be important design features of the Perth Short Stay,” she said.

The Aboriginal Short Stay team is committed to meaningful and ongoing engagement opportunities with Aboriginal people and the local community during the planning, development and design phases of the Perth Short Stay.

The City of Canning is working with Communities to support the delivery of Perth Short Stay Engagement opportunities for local community members and key stakeholders will include community information sessions and opportunities to be consulted and regularly updated.
