Online birth registrations a welcome move for new parents across WA

Until now, paper birth registration forms have been used, with parents required to send birth details through the post or lodge them in person at the Perth-based Registry.

Families must register children’s births within 60 days, or before newborns are eight weeks old.

Births, Deaths and Marriages Registrar Alison Jackson said, “This easy-to-use digital platform will assist more than 30-thousand families a year to register births in WA.”

“The Online Birth Registration Portal provides a streamlined and efficient service that will be particularly welcomed by parents living in regional and remote parts of our State.”

“Caring for a newborn is a busy and important time and it’s not easy for everyone to get to a Post or Registry office, though most people these days do have access to a smart device.”

There were 32,282 births registered in WA in 2023.

Registering a birth is free. Parents using the Online Registration Portal can order a birth certificate for a fee at the same time, or order a birth certificate at a later date.

“A birth certificate is an important identity document that allows access to a wide range of health, education and justice services,” Ms Jackson said.

“Proof of birth is required for enrolment in school and sports, for travel, employment, applying for loans and government services.”

“By providing a digital platform that streamlines the birth registration process, the Registry aims to improve and expand access to vital services across WA.”

New parents will be provided information on how to access the Online Birth Registration Portal when their baby is born.

Paper birth registration forms remain available upon request.
