On Friday 1 November 2024, the inaugural Goldfields Region Electricity (GRE) Forum took place in Kalgoorlie.
The Goldfields is a crucial part of the Western Australian economy and has a deep connection to the history and identity of our State. The region encompasses a large geographical area, rich in resources, minerals, cultural heritage, unique landscapes, and community opportunities.
Unlocking low-emission, renewable energy in the Goldfields is an important part of the State Government’s plans to transform and decarbonise our electricity system and will be critical to meeting our State’s target of Net Zero by 2050. To successfully transition, the Goldfields region will require new electricity infrastructure.
The GRE Forum brought together local Aboriginal people, industry, and government to explore the development of a new common-use electricity network in the region - the Goldfields Regional Network (GRN). This network would be privately-owned and developed collaboratively with an emphasis on ensuring benefits for Aboriginal people and communities in the region.
The GRN would connect renewable energy generation to where it is needed, allowing industry in the Goldfields access to low-emissions energy, and ensuring the supply of electricity in the region can meet future demand.
