A Greenwood public housing property is among the first metropolitan properties to be refurbished under Communities’ $319 million Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP).
Four metropolitan refurbishment works have been completed under the SHERP to date, with the combined works valued at $313,000. A further 56 refurbishments are currently underway across the state.
Local business Westport Construction refurbished the three-bedroom home, adding an estimated 20 years to its useful life.
The works include a fully refurbished kitchen, bathroom, laundry and toilet, as well as installation of new energy-efficient appliances and upgraded security. The home has also received full internal painting and all flooring has been replaced.
Communities is managing the refurbishment program which enables the Department to house vulnerable Western Australians from the public housing waitlist faster, without the additional cost and lengthy timeframe involved in replacing properties.
Announced by the State Government in June 2020, the SHERP will see the refurbishment of up to 1500 public, supported residential and community housing properties across the state.
Additionally, up to 250 new social housing properties will be constructed across WA under the SHERP, with targeted maintenance to up to 3800 regional social housing properties and subsidised housing for regional government workers.
It is expected approximately 1700 jobs will be supported through the SHERP’s delivery, with the package generating up to $660 million in economic activity across the state.
