The prison answered the Shire’s call for assistance by sending an officer and volunteer crew of three prisoners out to remove rubbish from the bushland site.
The items taken away included household appliances, car parts and building materials.
“The prisoners made sure nothing – not even a nail – was left behind,” EGRP Assistant Superintendent Scott Morley said.
“They were proud of their work and happy to have returned this patch of land back to its natural state.”
This was not the first time that EGRP prisoners have assisted the Shire.
“We did some work on the Kambalda Community Garden and I know the Shire will call on us again whenever they have something that needs doing well,” Mr Mortley said.
Under Section 95 of the Prisons Act, minimum security prisoners under escort can undertake community, charitable or voluntary work outside prisons.
Other examples of the work they do include landscaping and gardening, construction, maintenance, making up charity food hampers and catering.
All prisoners selected for Section 95 work are carefully screened and assessed as posing a minimal risk to the community.
The work allows prisoners to attain employment skills and make a contribution to the community.
