Events will be held across Western Australia to recognise and raise awareness of those who provide unpaid care to someone who needs assistance with their day-to-day living.
The flagship event for the week is the Carers WA Conference, which is sponsored by the Department of Communities.
Additionally, prominent buildings across Western Australia will be illuminated in aqua in recognition of the work that unpaid carers do, including Albany’s Town Square, the Eastern Goldfields Community Centre in Kalgoorlie as well as Yagan Square, Perth Bell Tower, Elizabeth Quay, King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mandurah Bridge, the Shipwreck Museum and Fremantle Port building across the Perth CBD.
This year we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Carers Recognition Act 2004, a significant milestone for carers and their loved ones here in Western Australia. Western Australia became the first jurisdiction to recognise unpaid carers. The Act was the first of its kind in Australia and extended legal rights to unpaid carers. It established the historic Western Australian Carers Charter, which empowers carers to be involved in decision making and ensures that their needs are considered.
This Carers Week, take the time to acknowledge and reach out to unpaid carer colleagues or carers in your own life, in any way you feel is appropriate.
