A total of almost $39 million in grants is being provided to community housing organisations across metropolitan and regional Western Australia.

The SHERP New Builds Grants will enable registered community housing providers and local government authorities to build suitable homes to meet the demand for social housing throughout Western Australia. These properties will provide safe and appropriate housing for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, young people, people with disability, seniors, women and children leaving family and domestic violence situations or those having difficulty accessing housing.

Minister for Housing, Hon John Carey MLA said one of the Government’s uppermost priorities is to ensure that the diverse needs of tenants are met across WA, particularly those who are finding it difficult to access housing in the tight private rental market.

“The SHERP New Build Grants program is a substantial investment to help meet this priority by enabling the construction of much needed new social housing with a variety of dwelling types and configurations.

“It’s great to see such an innovative range of projects funded through the grants program including Bethanie Housing, which has been allocated $5 million to purpose build a seven-storey, 50 apartment development for low-income earners over the age of 55.

"The State Government is committed to providing need-based housing for our most vulnerable Western Australians.

“The SHERP Grants program is a critical part of an innovative mix of initiatives to ensure Western Australians have access to high quality, safe and secure housing.”

The New Builds grants have been provided through the Department of Communities' Social Housing Economic Recovery Package (SHERP), a $319 million housing stimulus package dedicated to the delivery and maintenance of thousands of community housing properties across Western Australia.
