Access Western Australian Petroleum and Geothermal Information Management System (WAPIMS)
The Western Australian Petroleum and Geothermal Information Management System (WAPIMS) is a database of public information generated from activities conducted under the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources Act 1967 (PGERA67) and the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) Act 1982 (PSLA82). These activities include well drilling and completion, geophysical survey acquisition and reprocessing, as well as other activities related to the exploration, appraisal and development of petroleum, geothermal, natural hydrogen and helium resources, and underground storage of CO2. WAPIMS also hosts information about samples held in the Perth and Kalgoorlie Core Libraries.
Public release of information
Detailed information regarding the release of State petroleum data can be found in Part 9 of the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources (Resource Management and Administration) regulations 2015.
- Open information (also known as 'always open' information) including the name, location, type or purpose, and other general information about a well or survey may be made public by DEMIRS at any time.
- Well data and reports may be released two years after the end of the activity. Where permits expire through surrender, cancellation, revocation or termination the data becomes releasable on the day of expiry.
- The release of survey reports and data vary according to survey type, permit type, and commercial intent (exclusivity). While survey reports and data containing basic information may be released three years from the end of the activity, confidentiality periods of up to 15 years may apply.
State and Commonwealth jurisdictions
WAPIMS holds public information generated from energy resource exploration and production activities conducted within Western Australia’s onshore and state water boundaries, as well as WA Commonwealth offshore activities released before 1 January 2012.
For information on energy resource exploration conducted within Australian Commonwealth waters, visit the National Offshore Petroleum Information Management System website, or contact Geoscience Australia at ausgeodata@ga.gov.au or the National Offshore Petroleum Titles Administrator (NOPTA).
Report and data packages
We have data packages available on request, which contains all public reports and data available to individually download via WAPIMS.
Data packages are available for each sedimentary basin and includes the following data:
- Well reports and digital well logs, including sample analysis reports
- Geophysical survey reports, navigation and processed data
- Scanned images of seismic section (suitable for trace reconstruction to SEGY)
Contact us to request a data package. You may be required to provide a brand new, unopened hard disk drive to copy the data package onto.
Submitting energy resource exploration reports and data
Petroleum and Geothermal Title holders can submit reports and data required by PGERA67 or PSLA82 through the Petroleum and Geothermal Register (PGR).
PGR allows title holders to submit and track reports and data for the following activities:
- Wells
- Surveys
- Titles
All data submitted via PGR can only be viewed by the submitting title holders and relevant DEMIRS personnel. Templates, accepted data formats and other submission requirements are available via PGR. PGR allows file uploads of up to 220 MB.
