What we do

The Constitutional Centre of Western Australia, the first agency of its kind in Australia, falls within the responsibilities of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet. The Centre provides information, programs, and events relating to civics education and gives Western Australians the opportunity to learn about our State and Commonwealth systems of government, explore current issues, examine our political inheritance and understand how individuals can contribute to the State’s democratic development.

Housed in the beautifully restored old Hale School heritage building near Parliament House, our facilities include exhibition and seminar spaces, a parliamentary-style debating chamber, and permanent displays on the Constitution, aspects of citizenship and history relating to governance.

More information about the work of the Department of the Premier and Cabinet can be found here.

School education programs - in person and online

The Centre provides a wide range of engaging and informative education programs in a variety of formats which can be delivered to students in Year 4 to Year 9 during an excursion to the site

A series of online learning programs based on our face-to-face programs is now available. These programs are designed for students in Year 1 to Year 9, but can be adapted for other year groups and are also available for anyone keen to learn more about State, Federal and Local Government.

Our programs link strongly to the outcomes of the Western Australian Humanities and Social Sciences curriculum with a particular focus on the Civics and Citizenship components. All education sessions at the Constitutional Centre, and online programs, are provided free of charge.

Information about the school programs offered can be accessed here

Community education

The Centre welcomes requests from community groups for educational sessions, seminars and tours regarding the nature of Australia’s systems of government and its history.

We are also able to offer sessions on civics and citizenship to university students (such as pre-service teachers), TAFE classes, and recent migrant groups.

We don’t offer standard programs for these sessions, but are instead able to customise a program to match your required education outcomes.

All visits to the Centre must be booked in advance - we are unable to offer walk-in education or tours. If you are interested in visiting the Centre please contact us at cceducation@dpc.wa.gov.au
