Mobile safety camera trial

Exploring new and emerging technologies to make our roads safer for everyone
Last updated:

In July 2022, the Road Safety Commission conducted a six-month trial of mobile safety camera trailers.

The safety cameras were able to identify several high-risk behaviours at once including:

  • not wearing or incorrectly wearing a seatbelt
  • using a mobile phone while driving; and
  • speeding.

The camera technology was tested on a range of roads in the metropolitan, South West, Wheatbelt, Great Southern, Pilbara, Goldfields and Mid West regions.

In an Australian-first, the safety camera trailers were also used in pairs to measure both average speed and spot-speed.

Results from the trial highlight the prevalence of dangerous driving behaviour.

During the trial the safety camera trailers detected:

  • more than 265,000 drivers speeding
  • 66,000 drivers distracted by their mobile phones; and
  • 11,400 drivers or front seat passengers not wearing a seatbelt or wearing it incorrectly.

No infringements were issued during the trial.

A summary of trial findings is available below.
