The legal framework for the administration of exploration and recovery of petroleum, in the WA onshore and state waters areas, is provided within the Petroleum and Geothermal Energy Resources (Resource Management and Administration) Regulations 2015 (the ‘onshore’ regulations) and in the Petroleum (Submerged Lands) (Resource Management and Administration) Regulations 2015 (the ‘offshore’ regulations).

All petroleum and geothermal wells drilled in State jurisdictional areas are subject to State legislation and regulation administered by the department.
