The Government Architect Western Australia advises on policy and practice frameworks to improve the quality of the built environment.

The Government Architect plays an important role in identifying and advocating for policy reforms which improve the quality of the built environment.

A key achievement has been the establishment of the Design WA suite of policies built around State Planning Policy 7.0 – Design of the Built Environment.  This was developed in collaboration with the Western Australian Planning Commission and Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage and gazetted on 24 May 2019. It was followed by the establishment of a specific Apartment Design Code, Precinct Design Policy and amendments to the Residential Design Code for Medium Density development.  More information is available at Design WA (www.wa.gov.au).

The Government Architect also works closely with various government agencies involved in delivering buildings and structures to ensure good design as a key consideration.  This can involve project review and input, and advice on policy settings and processes to embed design quality in the initial conception, planning and procurement process to maximise public benefit and minimise cost.
