The Western Australian LNG Jobs Taskforce working groups

The Western Australian LNG Jobs Taskforce has developed 3 working groups tasked with developing initiatives in areas of opportunity for WA's LNG industry.
Last updated:

Education and Operations Working Group

The Education and Operations Working Group is the LNG Jobs Taskforce forum for addressing challenges and opportunities for the development of the skills required for the success of the Western Australia's existing LNG sector in the future energy economy.

Western Australia is home to world-class universities and several multi-sector collaborations developing exportable capabilities in new technologies, including LNG processing, remote operations, subsea, automation, marine services and geological surveying. WA is ready to take the next step in identifying the skills required for the future success of the LNG sector and pursuing opportunities created by new technologies.

Developing the LNG Operator Skills Framework

The Education and Operations Working Group is working on several initiatives, including supporting the development and execution of the LNG Operator Skills Framework, a set of 15 units of competency delivered as part of the existing Certificate III in Process Plant Operations. Developing the learning materials will ensure LNG process operators are taught in a consistent manner across training providers.

Business Development and Diversification Working Group

The Business Development and Diversification Working Group is the LNG Jobs Taskforce forum for addressing challenges and opportunities for local business participation in the LNG supply chain, including small to medium enterprises and Aboriginal owned businesses.

The growth of the local LNG sector has provided a unique opportunity for complementary industries to locate in Western Australia, and to develop and diversify to support project life cycles including the construction, operations, maintenance and decommissioning phases.

Developing the Forward Work Plans initiative

The Business Development and Diversification Working Group is working on several initiatives, including developing and presenting Forward Work Plans. Commencing in March 2020, Chevron, Woodside, Shell and Santos have volunteered to release 2 year procurement plans on an annual basis so that local businesses can plan their participation in future tender and contracting opportunities. The initiative expanded in 2021 to include a range of prime contractors from the oil and gas sector, reaching further into the supply chain. The plans are publicly available on a dedicated LNG Forward Work Plans page on the ICN Gateway website (external link).

Technology and Decarbonisation Working Group

The Technology and Decarbonisation Working Group is the LNG Jobs Taskforce forum for addressing challenges and opportunities for advancing innovative technologies, synergies between gas and renewables, and decarbonisation of the LNG sector.

Western Australia is an ideal location for new downstream processing and future energies projects. Western Australia is ready to take the next step in identifying opportunities for advancing innovative technologies, synergies between gas and renewables, and decarbonisation in the LNG sector.

Supporting the Future Energy Exports Cooperative Research Centre (FEnEX CRC)

The Technology and Decarbonisation Working Group is working on several initiatives, including supporting the establishment of the Future Energy Exports Cooperative Research Centre (external link). The centre will undertake cutting-edge, industry-led research, education and training to held sustain Australia's position as a leading LNG exporter, and enable it to become a leading global hydrogen exporter.

The WA Government in collaboration with the FEnEX CRC is investigating the development of a Futures Facility, a microscale research and teaching plant to allow testing of new LNG and hydrogen processes in Kwinana.
