The Office of Criminal Injuries Compensation (OCIC) is a Tribunal which provides for compensation to victims of offences in some circumstances pursuant to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 2003 (WA)

The Office of Criminal Injuries Compensation provides for victims of crime to apply for compensation for injury such as bodily harm, mental or nervous shock or pregnancy, resulting from an offence or alleged offence, and for certain defined losses. It also provides for compensation for certain losses in the case of an unlawful death.

Case Manager

The Case Manager is responsible for ensuring the production of accurate and timely case management and administrative support to the judiciary and the Manager of Criminal Injuries Compensation. The position liaises with a diverse range of stakeholders and is responsible for ensuring a quality service to victims of crime and other stakeholders in accordance with established legislation, policies, and procedures.

The Role

The duties of the Case Manager are varied. They include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides specialist case management services, advice, information and assistance to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides a case management service for an allocated caseload of applications for criminal injuries compensation.
  • Receives and prepares correspondence for case management files.
  • Collates supporting information from the applicant and various related sources where required, including WA Police Service, Director of Public Prosecution, Department of Health, and other sources, and puts forward applications for compensation to the judicial Assessor for determination.
  • Organises applicant hearings at the Assessor’s direction, attends in the capacity of Bench Clerk and carries out post hearing processes.
  • Provides case management support to the Assessor, before, during and after hearings.
  • Provides advice and assistance to clients and members of the legal profession on applications for compensation.
  • Liaises with agencies, clients, and individuals on behalf of the Chief Assessor and the Manager OCIC.
  • Attends to routine telephone calls and visitors to the office on behalf of the team of Assessors and the Manager OCIC.
  • Performs data entry in relevant office systems and maintains, with others, files, statistics and records management.
  • Interprets and applies workplace policies and procedures to achieve satisfactory case management outcomes.
  • Interprets, organises, processes, maintains and communicates information effectively and efficiently with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Other duties as required in accordance with strategic objectives, business plans, local workload priorities and performance management plans.

Recoveries Officer

The Recoveries Officer role works within a team responsible for the recovery of outstanding criminal injuries compensation paid to victims of crime from liable offenders pursuant to Part 6 of the Criminal Injuries Compensation Act 2003 (WA).

The Role

Includes but is not limited to:

  • Provides specialist services, advice, information and assistance on recoveries to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Recovers outstanding criminal injuries compensation debt owed to the State of Western Australia by liable offenders in accordance with legislative and policy requirements.
  • Negotiates repayment arrangements and the settlement of debts with debtors. Investigates and resolves debt queries.
  • Conducts database searches for debtors contact details and instigates contact regarding outstanding debts.
  • Liaises with State Solicitors on individual debt recovery matters which have progressed to legal action.
  • Reconciles financial receipts ensuring accurate allocation to debtor accounts.
  • Attends counter calls at the office from offenders and other stakeholders.
  • Attends to routine telephone and office duties on behalf of Supervisor, Recoveries.
  • Provides advice and assistance to clients and members of the legal profession on recoveries matters.
  • Performs data entry in relevant office systems and maintains, with others, files, statistics, and records management.
  • Interprets and applies workplace policies and procedures to achieve satisfactory debt recovery outcomes.
  • Organises Reimbursement Hearings, collates file documentation for judicial Assessor perusal prior to the hearing, attends the hearing, supports the Assessor as bench clerk, and carries out post hearing processes including document production.
  • Processes daily payments.
