This note applies to the storage and use of toxic and hazardous substances, that if released into the environment in significant quantities, may harm living things dependent on good quality water resources. The note provides advice and recommendations on the location, construction, operation and potential closure of toxic and hazardous substances storage facilities.

Toxic and hazardous substances include pesticides, herbicides, fuel, explosives, flammable liquids, cleaners, alcohols, fertilisers, medical or veterinary chemicals, pool chemicals and corrosive substances.
