Intellectual property (IP) includes everything from inventions to written works, artworks, designs, images and software. It could be described as ‘creations of the mind’ or exclusive knowledge.
The activities of the WA Government often generate IP with potential economic, social and environmental benefits for the community.
The Policy provides guidance to agencies on the protection and management of this important State asset, and to assist agencies identify and pursue IP opportunities to maximise public benefit.
The updated WA Government Intellectual Property Policy was released in May 2023 following a review by the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation in 2022.

- Identify and facilitate opportunities to obtain maximum benefit to WA from Government IP.
- Consider the commercialisation of Government IP where appropriate and financially viable.
