Water note 15 - Weeds in waterways

Guidance
Information about common weeds and preventing weed invasions in waterways.
Last updated:

This water note provides guidance on weeds in wetlands and waterways.

Across the south-west of Western Australia, weeds are slowly, or in some cases quite quickly, encroaching upon riparian zones in rural and urban areas.

The native vegetation on seasonally dry land around wetlands and the adjacent dry upland is slowly being replaced by grasses and other weed species.

In some rivers, lakes and swamps, aquatic weeds are invading water bodies and replacing native aquatic plants. Furthermore, many weed species are exploiting the opportunities for establishment in areas suffering from salinisation and waterlogging.
