Experimental oxidation of Bassendean sands in soil columns

Technical Report
The primary purpose of this study is to determine the adequacy of the current action criterion for managing the sandy soils of the Bassendean dunal system.
Last updated:

The criterion for managing sandy soils generally assumes that there is sufficient neutralising capacity within the soils to buffer minor acidity generated when the sulfur content is less than 0.03%.

However, the recent acid sulfate soil survey has shown that its applicability for carbonate free Bassendean sands containing less than 1% clay may be deficient to resist acidification with increased soil oxidation.
