In accordance with regulation 20(1) of the Environmental Protection (Prohibited Plastics and Balloons) Regulations 2018 the Deputy Director General (Climate and Sustainability) of the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation (the department) may grant an exemption if it is reasonably necessary to so. The exemption notice below applies to circumstances where the use of certain prescribed plastic items is necessary for medical and/or scientific purposes, including the following, but not limited to:

  • the collection of specimens to be tested or studied; or
  • as a transparent closed vessel for live experiment.

Other conditions apply, so please read the exemption notice carefully to determine whether the exemption applies to your circumstances.
