A baseline study of organic contaminants in the Swan and Canning catchment drainage system using passive sampling devices

Research and analysis
Water Science Technical Series report WST 5 - Study of the concentrations of a range of organic contaminants in selected Swan Canning drains.
Last updated:

This assessment of contaminants in the Swan and Canning Catchment Drainage System is a baseline study conducted as part of the Non-Nutrient Contaminants Program.

The objectives of the study were:

  • to determine concentrations of a range of organic contaminants comprising insecticides, herbicides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in selected Swan Canning drains
  • to conduct time-integrated measurements of organic contaminants in order to capture ‘one-off’ or ‘flash’ pollution events on addition to base concentrations
  • to suggest possible sources and potential environmental impacts of any detected organic contaminants.
