- Part of the McGowan Government's $9 million investment into Central Spalding
The $4.9 million second stage construction of the Spalding renewal project in Geraldton is now underway with works beginning on new road extensions, footpaths and upgrades to AMC Park.
The second stage of the project follows the demolition of 12 derelict and ageing social housing properties on Bogle Way and Sullivan Court, making way for a new road connection, while improvements to the Mitchell Street Community Centre building and general landscaping works are also being undertaken.
A new road and footpath network will be constructed to connect Mitchell Street and Bogle Way. The new roadworks will improve accessibility and connection in the suburb and are part of several measures to make Spalding a more vibrant place in which to live and visit.
The Spalding project is part of a $20 million regional renewal package to support social housing revitalisation in suburban areas of Geraldton, Bunbury and Albany.
Works are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The third and final stage of the Spalding Urban Renewal Project will see refurbishment undertaken to existing public housing properties in the area to complete the project.
Comments attributed to Housing Minister John Carey:
"Our Government is investing $2.4 billion in social housing and homelessness measures over four years, which includes the delivery of 3,300 social housing properties across WA and the refurbishment and maintenance of many thousands more.
"As part of that commitment, we're investing $9 million into the Spalding Renewal Project to transform the precinct into a thriving community.
"It's great to see second stage construction works underway which will include improved road and pedestrian connections which will result in increased accessibility around the suburb."
Comments attributed to Geraldton MLA Lara Dalton:
"All these improvements will add new life into the heart of the suburb and help promote a strong sense of community.
"At the same time, the general landscaping works and street beautification will help improve the look and feel of the area.
"The upgrades to AMC Park and Mitchell Street Community Centre will also provide an important focal point for people to meet."
